Our Workshops

ReplayMyPlay hosts a series of workshops for school-age children in our community. Workshop topics include information about the project and related alternative energy innitiatives and ideas. Workshops will be led by staff and volunteers and include hands on activities. A tentative list of topics is listed below —

Workshop 1: The Energy Cycle
Introduction to energy and environment concepts. We will answer such questions as: What is the carbon cycle? How much energy do we use in our daily activities? Provide an elementary explanation of how the project works. We will also display our project prototypes. The activity portion of the workshops will be to brainstorm ways to represent personal energy use and compare it to how much energy produce by the project. Participants are urged to think on the subject of how much energy is needed for various activities.

Workshop 2: Alternative Energy Play
Overview of various alternative energy sources - wind, solar, water, and biomass with demos of hand-crank and pedal-powered gadgets. Participants are split into groups, where they are assigned a different energy source to act out. Provided are explanations of the motions these particular energy sources, as well as costumes! After a brief rehearsal period, groups come together and we see how the combined motion of all of the different sources powers a light!

Workshop 3: Model Solar Car Building
Build your own Solar Car! NESEA Junior Solar Sprint workshop with step-by-step instructions presented. Participants are split into groups to design and assemble cars. Plan for a race day if not completed.

Workshop 4: What to Power
What should happen with the energy in the ReplayMyPlay swing? Kids brainstorm their own designs and play around with different ideas alongside the project team.

Workshop 5: Alternative Fuels and Transportation
For the Alternative Fuels portion of the workshop, we invite Asa Watten to speak about biodiesel, his carbon garden project, and his work at GTECH. Kids will enjoy a demonstration: making biodiesel from waste grease.

Workshop 6 & 7: City Highschool Volunteers Teach Environmental Concepts
SCA City High School kids join us to talk about environmental science topics, including an activity for children, designed by volunteers.

Workshop 8: Green Toys
Design your own “green” toy! Local design company presents their sustainable toy designs.
